Classic Belgian Waffles

Classic Belgian Waffles

🥞 Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1¾ cups whole milk
  • 2 large eggs, separated
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Nonstick cooking spray

👩‍🍳 Preparation

1

Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk everything together until all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.

⏱ About 2 minutes
2

Prepare the Wet Ingredients and Egg Whites

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg yolks, melted butter and vanilla extract. In another clean bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.

⏱ About 2 minutes
3

Finish the Waffle Batter

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently fold everything together until the flour is just incorporated. Do not overmix. A few small lumps will help keep the waffles light and fluffy.

⏱ About 2–3 minutes
4

Rest the Batter

Allow the waffle batter to rest for about 5 minutes. This gives the flour time to hydrate and helps create softer, thicker and fluffier waffles.

⏱ About 5 minutes
5

Preheat the Waffle Iron

Preheat the Belgian waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly coat both plates with nonstick cooking spray.

⏱ About 2 minutes
6

Cook the Waffles

Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the rested batter. Pour enough batter into the center of the hot waffle iron to cover about two-thirds of the surface. Close the lid and cook until deeply golden and crisp, about 4–5 minutes; do not flip.

⏱ About 4–5 minutes per waffle

Serve Warm

Transfer the cooked waffles to a serving plate and continue cooking the remaining batter. Serve warm with butter, maple syrup, fresh berries or your favorite toppings.

⏱ Ready to serve

📦 Storage

Store completely cooled waffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them with parchment paper between each waffle for up to 2 months. Reheat before serving.
